TV and radio recorder

In addition to videos that have been created in house or shared on YouTube, another source of video content that can be included in the VLE comes from the UHI's TV and radio recorder. This service is fully licensed and recordings from this can be used for educational use to domestic students.

Programmes broadcast on many Freeview channels can be recorded for this purpose, and recordings can be scheduled up to one week in advance. In addition to recording programmes live the service currently records BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4 24 hours each day and these recordings are held in a temporary folder for about 1 week. Recorded programmes can be selected from the time line and published for viewing. Once recordings have been published they are added to the queue to be made available on the streaming server, where they will be added to the TV Recordings folder.

Once the video is on the streaming server there are options to add chapters to the video so that students can be directed to watch key moments in the programme. A guide to creating chapters in Helix has been created by Learning and Information Services. The process for including recorded programmes, and all other videos on the streaming server, is outlined in a UHI video guide.

The Television recording facility is accessed via “My UHI”,   go into  My UHI and then click on the icon on the desktop. Accessing the service requires an account to have been set up - email tvrecording@uhi.ac.uk if you would like one to be created.

Learning and Information Services have created a short video showing the steps that should be followed to access the TV recorder and schedule a recording.
