How to deal with mistakes

Image: How to deal with mistakes

One of the most intimidating aspects of creating audio and video recordings is how to deal with any mistakes made during the recording. Everyone makes mistakes, and it is important to learn how to deal with them during recording sessions.

In most recordings and micro lectures the best course of action is often to ignore the mistake and continue. Small mistakes or stutters are part of a natural speaking style and will not detract from the videos. Expectations are also important when considering how to deal with mistakes. Students will not be expecting videos that match the standards of broadcast television and will not be put off by small mistakes.

There are a number of different ways to deal with larger mistakes depending on your skill level or the time available. In most circumstances when recording short videos the best way to deal with mistakes is to stop the recording and start again. When video content is split up into smaller videos this shouldn’t present too big a problem.

If you are willing and able to use video editing software like Windows Movie Maker, the mistakes can be removed. In order to make this kind of edit possible you should stop, go back to the beginning of the sentence or section where you made the mistake and then start again. Make sure you include a lead in and lead out. This will ensure that a clean cut can be made in the video to create a smooth speech. This technique is common in all forms of edited video, including documentaries and recordings of stand-up comedy.
