Approaching assessment deadline

It is a good idea to remind your students about what was covered at induction on assessment, feedback and feedforward as this may not have been uppermost in their minds at the start of their course.  A few weeks before the assessment deadline:

  • remind students of the link to Essential student skills, particularly the sections on Assessment and Core skills;
  • if not already covered, ensure that you set time during lectures to give general advice on making the most of feedback and feed forward;
  • provide an opportunity for students to submit assignment plans or outlines well ahead of assessment deadline;
  • allow students to submit multiple drafts to Turnitin.

The benefits of using Turnitin

Matt Sillars, Social Science Lecturer at Inverness College, describes the benefits of using Turnitin.

Approaching assessment deadline

Matt Sillars, Social Science Lecturer at Inverness College, describes the benefits of using Turnitin

Foundations of research is my main module and I have about 250 student per year. I also use it on Dissertation and 2 other modules with smaller cohorts.  Students have been very happy with Turnitin and often email me for advice about reducing their score. I set 20% as my margin and I often get emails about 10% scores and less!

Here are some quotes:

"Any tips on getting that percentage down on Turnitin? The big 10% one is quotes and references so don't see how I can really reduce that! Any help will be appreciated"

"By the way I would like to ask if 12% similarity from Turnitin is ok to pass? The reason is I put some citations in my assignment...."

"Turnitin also came back with a similarity score straight away which I wasn't expecting. I was panicking in case the similarity came back over 20% and I would have to look at my assessment again."

"I submitted my assessment but it says something about 25% similarity, what does that mean?"

"I submitted my assignment through turnitin last night, I received my score rather quickly but I soon realised I had missed a reference. So I corrected that reference and resubmitted"

"I submitted my assessment in to turnitin again and it's come back as 0% for a second time"

I also sent this email to a high one I spotted:

"The Turnitin system gave a 31% similarity score for your assignment. This is very high and it indicates that your writing technique is not really working well for you. It seems that you are not using quotation marks properly to show that sections of your text are not your own words. This is often an issue when you begin a course and I would suggest that you chat to your PAT about this and gain advice on how to use sources more appropriately. The tutor marking your work will also give you advice on how to develop your technique. Please let me know if you have any queries about this. I have attached the report for you to have a look at – scroll to the end of the details."
